MAP: Singapore Airlines will be the first international airline to operate direct flights to Western Sydney Airport when it officially opens in 2026. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, along with Transport Minister Catherine King, confirmed this agreement today. The launch of direct flights by Singapore Airlines to Western Sydney Airport not only opens up opportunities for connectivity, tourism, and trade but also contributes to fostering mutually beneficial cooperation.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that Singapore Airlines is one of the best airlines in the world and is the first international airline to commit to operating at Western Sydney Airport. This move paves the way for greater connectivity between the airport, travelers, and other international destinations.
Attending the press conference, Ms. King agreed with this viewpoint and thanked Singapore Airlines for choosing Western Sydney. She also announced the construction progress to facilitate the opening of the flight route in 2026.
In addition to Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Vietnam Airlines are the next two airlines currently in negotiation. Talks with other countries are taking place within the framework of bilateral agreements, in which Western Sydney International Airport is an important part.
This news brings a significant boost to the regional economy in general and to the $5.3 billion project in particular.
Previous agreements with Qantas and Jetstar for operating domestic flights from this new airport have also been signed.
Western Sydney Airport is expected to serve 10 million passengers annually at Badgerys Creek, expanding to 80 million passengers per year by 2060.
Currently, the construction has been about 85% completed and is on track to open by the end of 2026. Once finished, the area will be twice the size of Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.
